The Victorian Classroom
Primary 6/7 paid a visit to Newry, Mourne and Down Museum at Bagenal’s Castle today to experience life in a Victorian classroom.
The experience began with the children dressing up in hats, waistcoats and smocks. They visited the classroom where they met ‘Master Cull’ and his monitor.
The children answered the roll call, chanted times tables, wrote on slates, practiced needlework and participated in drill activities outdoors. Everyone then visited a gallery in the museum where artefacts from the 1800’s are on display.
The children showed their knowledge of Victorian school life and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to experience this in the wonderful classroom setting in the museum.
We are most grateful to Declan and the staff at the museum for making the visit possible. The learning which had taken place in our own classroom during the past few weeks came to life before our eyes today.
